2021 photo recap

[Insert paragraph here about reflecting about life and learning valuable life lessons along the process. Yada yada yada, include anecdotes of personal growth and big life events. Finish with emotional flurry of overcoming adversity even though all the below photos point to the fact that “adversity” isn’t in your personal vocabulary.]

Me pretending to be a walrus. (I strategically chose the best photo in my camera roll as my premier photo in an effort to make you feel bad about your own life.)

Amazing seats at my first ever NFL game to watch my favorite team - the team currently known as the “Football Team”, and formally known as something a little bit more controversial than that. We didn’t win, but we did score 10 points. My fantasy kicker scored an equally impressive 9 points.

First trip to Colorado. Backdropped by Boulder’s beautiful, iconic Flatirons, blocked by the overcast, less-iconic Colorado skys.

Basically my gym membership, but also represents the big event of my generation. No, I didn’t fight in a war, but I did stay at home for like 8 months. #WeAllHaveOurBattles

Blocking ferry traffic for several hours with a dead-battery car, also the moment I realized Maddie and I are fairly good at dealing with stressful situations.

Thanksgiving in Idaho.

Action shot of some of my favorite hobbies. #LifeInTheFastLane

Enjoying the beauty of a good book, couldn’t imagine anything more peaceful.

Both my sister and girlfriend are named “Madison”, so distinguishing between them has been confusing for my family. Since my girlfriend spells her name as “Maddie” (compared to my sister’s “Madie”) it was suggested we call her “Maddie double d”. We’re still thinking through the options.

Thanksgiving in Tillamook. Didn’t get a photo of the family, but captured the more important part of the holiday - the food. Includes the best pumpkin pie I’ve ever had, a 4-hour Claire Saffitz masterpiece, prepared by Maddie double d.

My pseudo standing desk. I submitted this photo for my all-company meeting, which was shown in “a what have you been up to in covid” slide reel. The equity principal jokingly made the comment that this was a liability waiting to happen. I disagree; this is innovation waiting to happen.

Doodling while waiting for my 5-minute SAS code to run at work. Essentially the doodle is a territory war between four different tribes of shapes. On each of their turns, a random number is generated, which maps to a direction, and the shape can expand their territory in that direction if nothing blocks them. As can seen from the image, the squares had a good game, but the X’s outscored them by a point.

North Cascades National Park, because we’re outdoorsy folk, and have a photo to prove it.

Not to brag, but my younger sister finished college in three years. Not only that, she’ll finish her master’s a year early. Very proud of her.

More proof that we get out. I don’t remember where this is at, or when, but I am confident that it’s me.

The best steak I’ve ever had and also Maddie and I’s first dinner date. It was only 6 months into the relationship.

This year Maddie read American Dirt, Salt Fat Acid Heat, A Burning, Panchikno, The Vanishing Half, The Great Alone, Such a Fun Age, Dearly, Song of Achilles, The Defining Decade, The Happiness Advantage, Common Wealth, Klara and the Sun, Animal Farm, Malibu Risking, Angela’s Ashes, Four Winds - and then - she told me about them, so in essence, I’ve read all those books too.

I get my peaches down in Palisade.

On the road again.
